Here are a few more tips to help you maximize your budget:
:: Retail
- Memorial Day weekend means an abundance of sales at the mall, home furnishing stores and home improvement centers, as retailers cash in on the long weekend. Consider waiting on your major purchases until this time. That's because the biggest markdowns during the month of May happen during Memorial Day weekend, when most people are thinking about barbecues, picnics, parades, and boating. Stores now need to work harder than ever to get people to shop.
- May is a good month for spring clothing sales. Stores are already starting to mark down their beach and summer wear. However, it suggests waiting until Memorial Day weekend for the best markdowns, when you will find the lowest clothing prices since January.
- May is also a good month for mattresses, box springs, and bedding, according to DealNews. And it's a good month to shop at home stores like Pottery Barn, which runs some of its best sales this time of year. DealNews says this is also a great time to haggle on a gym membership, because people are now exercising outdoors, and not thinking of joining a gym.
- May also marks the start of garage sale season, so keep your eye on the classified ads!
- You’ll want to frequent the thrift stores and consignment stores this month too, as people embark on spring cleaning and donate their unwanted items.
What Not To Buy
- May is not a good month for buying jewelry, at least until the day after Mother's Day. It says jewelry prices can actually increase at the start of May, in anticipation of all the shopping for Mom.
- This is also a bad time to find a markdown on a grill or patio furniture, because it is peak season. The big markdowns on grills begin on the 4th of July.
- And If you need a laptop, hold off until the big back to school sales that start in mid July.
