Frugal Beauty: DIY Facial At Home!

I have been doing my own facials at home for awhile now & let me tell you – it feels amazing! Plus, my skin always feels so soft and refreshed after my facial. If you have never done this, then put it on your ” to-try it list!”

First, you always want to start out with a clean make-up free face. To really soothe, start out with steam. Steam hydrates your skin, and opens up your pores.

Here’s How:

Step one – Bring a pot of water to a simmer. I added some lemon, and mint leaves in mine this time. But you can definitely get creative with this. Lavender is awesome too! You can do fresh Lavender, or add a few drops of essential oil. Just use your favorite scent for the mood that your in, or just using plain water is fine too.

Step two – When the water is simmering, and steaming, remove the pot from the heat. Let it cool off for just a second.

Step three- Put a towel over the back of your head to trap in steam, lean your face over the pot. Please be careful, and don’t get too close! You don’t want to get burned –okay!? Just get close enough that you can feel the steam on your face. Stay there until it stops steaming, or for as long as comfortable.  Then pat your face dry with a towel.

 exfoliate

For me, next comes exfoliation.  I love a good scrub. It sloughs off dead skin cells, leaving your skin super soft! Go Here  for a few of my favorite recipes for a good face scrub.

strawberry mask

After I thoroughly exfoliate, rinse, and pat my face dry- Then I move on to a Face Mask.  My favorite is probably the Strawberry refresher. It looks funny while it is on your face, but my skin always feels great after all is said and done. Go Here  to see the recipe for the Strawberry Refresher & more face mask recipes.

Leave the mask on for 10-15 minutes. And why not lay back and relax with some cucumbers on your eyes!

That’s all that there is to it! I really hope that you all try some of these out! They really do work, and it feels great to relax and pamper yourself every now and again and not have to spend a lot of money doing it!

If you have any great facial tips, please leave them in the comments!

Frugal Beauty: DIY Face Scrub Recipes

Exfoliating your face makes your skin beautiful by sloughing off dead skin cells and leaves your face feeling soft without the hefty price tag of expensive chemical peels at a salon/spa.

Here are two of my favorite recipes for a DIY Face Scrub.

Rejuvenating Citrus Facial Scrub

{This scrub is wonderful if you have acne, blackheads, sun spots, age spots, freckles, or if you went a little crazy with the self tanner, LOL.}

What you'll need:
  • (1) tsp. lemon juice (for oily, combo, normal skin)
  • OR (1) tsp. fresh orange juice (for dry, sensitive skin)
  • 1/4 tsp. organic sugar (brown sugar would also work)
  • Cotton rounds or cotton balls
Here's How:

  1. Start with a clean face. Splash warm water onto your face to open your pores.
  2. Soak the cotton round into the citrus juice until it is soaked, about 1 tsp. Then sprinkle about 1/4 tsp. of sugar on top.
  3. Gently buff your skin in a circular motion, concentrating on any problem areas. If you find that the lemon juice is stinging your face too much, then dilute it with some water.
  4. Rinse with cool water to close up the pores! That's it!
Tips:
* Make sure to wear a good SPF. Lemons make your skin more sensitive to the sun.
* Do this once a week - try it out, you might love what it does to your skin plus it's cheap!

Why this works:

Lemons are filled with AHA's (Alpha hydroxy acids) and BHA's (beta hydroxy acids) which help to remove the top layer of dead skin cells, lighten hyper pigmentation (sun spots, freckles) and kill bacteria (acne, blackheads). Sugar aids in sloughing off dead skin cells and leaves the skin silky smooth.

Oatmeal Face Scrub

This face scrub is a more gentle scrub than the lemon one listed above, but it also works wonders! For this Face Scrub, you will only need three ingredients:

  • 1 TBS. Oatmeal (oats)
  • 1 TBS. Baking Soda
  • Water
All that you have to do is add 1 TBS. of Oats, with 1 TBS. of Baking soda. Then gradually add a little water at a time, stirring, until the mixture is the consistency of a paste. Be careful not to add too much water. Gently rub the face scrub mixture on your face in a circular motion with your fingertips. Concentrate on problem areas. Rinse off with water.

After you do one of these face scrubs, you face will feel smooth and amazing!

I have enjoyed composing these post, because I am also pampering myself! And it feels amazing! Do you know any more face scrub recipes that you would like to add, or any tips to share? If so, Please leave a comment!

Frugal Beauty: Thrifty Foot Scrub & Soak Recipes!

It doesn't have to cost an arm & a leg to get pampered! Here is a thrifty and frugal treat for your feet! You will love it!

Step 1:

What you'll need:

  • Organic sugar (brown sugar would also work)
  • Olive Oil
  • Essential Oil (optional)
Make a wonderful foot scrub. Just combine equal parts of organic sugar, and olive oil, in a glass bowl.  Stir together until you get the right consistency, like a paste. You can also add a few drops of your favorite essential oil  (Lavender Oil is my favorite).

Step 2:

Grab a plastic tub large enough to soak both of your feet at the same time and fill it with warm water. I found the tub pictured above at Dollar General for under $3, it's actually a dish tub and it works perfect for this purpose!

Some optional things that you can add to your foot soak...

  • Add 1/2 cup Epsom Salts
  • Add several drops of your favorite essential oils.
  • Pretty flower petals from your garden
Now, just sit in a comfortable low chair and soak your feet for at least 10 minutes. Dry your feet with a thick, fluffy towel, then place the towel on the floor under your feet. Dip your fingers into the foot scrub mixture and take a small scoop, just enough to rub a small section. Working on small areas, give yourself a thorough foot massage with the mixture. Be sure to concentrate on your heels and other rough spots.

If you have extra time to spare, then you could even wrap your feet in plastic wrap, and tuck them into the towel. Your own body temperature will allow the oil to soak in even further.

After you have rubbed both feet, rinse your feet in the plastic tub and pat dry.

Step 3:

Now, is the perfect time to apply a heavy lotion and some fuzzy socks to help to retain the smoothness!

{Another option: You can continue on with an At Home Pedicure. So that you have pretty toesies too!}

I hope that you enjoy this! I spent some time today pampering myself, and it feels great!
